Appreciating Wine

What constitutes quality in a wine?                                                                                                                                                            “When we know the answer to that, we are better able to sort through the hundreds of wines on our retail shelves with a better sense of confidence as well as ‘evaluate those [experts] who do so for us with seeming exactitude.”

Appreciating Wine

This section is comprised of essays, articles and presentations that Linda has created over the years, which have appeared in newspapers, magazines and periodicals, plus current postings of her most recent work.  The activities she has included were part of the classes in Wine Appreciation she taught at Brock University.

  Wine and Food Pairing

There are no rules of pairing correctness.  There are pairings that may have potential limitations, but there are measures you can take to address them.  Components of wine and food are the key elements that we taste: sweetness, sourness, bitterness, saltiness and  umami.  These essays and exercises explore how those components interact with each other and with your individual taste thresholds.

  Wine Appreciation

The theme that runs through these pieces is learning how to ‘read’ a wine. Reading a wine accurately enables a wine lover to gain insight into and  arrive at a deeper illumination of its quality.  Linda has always felt that it is not a matter of picking apart its pH, or residual sugar, or being burdened by jargon, but rather, it’s about developing the confidence to feel secure enough to pay interior attention to one’s own senses.  The articles can serve as a form of self study to guide you through this delicious journey.
